Laser tattoo removal pain laser tattoo removal pain

Laser Tattoo Removal Pain

There is no doubt laser tattoo removal pain is real. However, the pain of laser tattoo removal can be blunted. Lidocaine and creams blunt tattoo removal pain. So laser tattoo removal pain isn't always a necessary evil.

Although, pain proves that you are getting a good reaction. The pain of laser removal is from the shattering of ink.

However, the pain of laser tattoo removal can be decreased by cold, creams and lidocaine injections.

Since Ink being shattered by the laser is the root cause of tattoo removal pain.  If you have no pain at all without the use of lidocaine then, your treatment will not be effective.

How painful is laser tattoo removal? Well, is has been described as if a rubber band stretched out was released and snapped onto your skin. This snapping causes a momentary sharp pain. Other describe the pain of laser tattoo removal like having the sting of bacon grease splattering onto the area. In any event laser tattoo removal pain is intense.

Moreover, the pain is easily controlled.

Fortunately, there is a lot we can do to reduce laser tattoo removal pain and even block the pain of the laser completely.

  1. Chillers: Super cold air blown over the area before, during and after your laser tattoo removal session. Thus, the frigid air blunts the pain.
  2. Ice Packs: similar to the chiller but not as effective.  The temperature of the ice isnt low enough to really blunt the pain.  Ice is about 30 degrees and the chiller is -5 to -10.
  3. Distraction:  Vibrating the area to sends multiple stimuli to your brain at one time. The pain pathways are blocked by these multiple pain pathways.
  4. Topical Lidocaine: A topical cream most often BLT cream ( Benzocaine-Lidocaine-Tetracaine ) reduces pain as well. Lidocaone cream is placed on the tattoo for 20-30 minutes then washed off. The Lidocaine cream will take the edge off your laser tattoo removal pain.
  5. Lidocaine Injections: The ultimate blocker if laser tattoo removal pain are lidocaine injections. Lidocaine injected into the dermis or SQ tissues as well will numb the area fully and may result in a complete loss of laser tattoo removal pain.

There are drawbacks to the lidocaine cream or injections. First there is a maximum dose you can give and even though it is a cream transdermal absorption is great and lidocaine toxicity can occur if to large and area is covered. I limit the area to nothing more than 8x4.

Lidocaine injections must be given by a medical professional and an understanding of anatomy is a must as is the amount of milligrams of lidocaine you are injecting. An overdose of lidocaine can cause seizures and possibly death.
