Military Regulations for Tattoos

Laser tattoo Removal for Military Service

First I want to commend you all for your loyalty and patriotism for our great nation.

The desire to serve in the military to preserve the freedoms  we take for granted is something that requires a personal dedication not found in everyone.

Unfortunately, with the recent popularity of tattoo art the branches of our military have taken measures to ensure that our fighting force maintains professionalism not seen in any other countries armed service be it Army , Navy, Air Force or Marines.

TATTOOS rules    regulation 670-1

Tattoos cannot be located anywhere on the neck or head above the lines of a T-shirt. AR 670-1 will now PROHIBIT TATTOOS:

The uniform neckline is Class A but also includes the physical fitness uniform. The physical fitness uniform is being interpreted as the V-neck cut T-shirt

Visible band tattoos cannot be longer than two inches wide. There can be no more than one visible band tattoo. Sleeve tattoos on arms or legs are not allowed.

Each visible tattoo below the elbow or knee must be smaller than the size of the wearer's extended hand. There cannot be more than four total tattoos below the elbows or knees.

Soldiers who currently violate these revisions can be grand fathered in as long as commanders validate their current tattoos. Also, each year, commanders much check each Soldier for new tattoos that might be prohibited. The checks will be done when Soldiers are in their physical fitness uniform and do not include tattoos that might be hidden by the shorts or T-shirts.

Prohibited tattoos include those just mentioned, as well as ones that could be deemed extremist, indecent, sexist or racist.

MARINES:

A tattoo on the forearm must be able to be covered by your hand and can not extend beyond the sleeve. No Head , neck or mouth tattoos.

Laser tattoo removal takes time so please allow sufficient time before appearing for your entrance physical.

Many of my patients specifically marines tell me they will re- ink their tattoo after joining.

I just spoke to a career marine who told me that doing so could hinder  your advancement in the ranks during a military career

The average tattoo, black or black with some red require multiple sessions spaced 6 weeks apart.

Once again thank your for offering your service to our country.
