In September during the Advances & Controversies in Laser and Aesthetic Surgery Conference
In Austria 9/2010 a small study was presented in which a physician used a Q -Switched laser on black tattoo ink every 20 minutes four consecutive times.
The results were suprising in that there was 75% clearance in a single day without the development of a scar.
When a laser interacts with the tattoo ink the ink is shattered into small particles and some of it vaporises and is seen as a clouding of the tattoo which lasts about 20 minutes.
Repeating the laser process soon after lasering a tattoo lead to no results because the laser did not go deep enough into the skin.
However by waiting 20 minutes and repeating the laser tattoo removal they were able to break up the ink into tinier particles thus making them more available to the immune system. known as the R-20 study.
Although the study was small the 4 laser treatment process seems to be safe with only a moderate risk of scaring and hypopigmentation.
Dr. Messina has performed many four shot One Day laser tattoo removal treatments
However it must be a light tattoo on extremely fair skin to be safe and effective.
